RipGo:
This portable doubles as a CD burner. This means you still
need a computer to load music into it, but your computer
doesn't need to have a CD-R drive. Weighing in at eight
ounces, the RipGo is a bit too large to fit in most pockets.
The rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery provides playback
for about five hours; WMA files play for six hours but
MP3 files play for just three hours. Many users may want
to carry a spare battery. When it first came out, the
RipGo cost around $400, but is now available for about
half of that, making it a good buy.
Sony
MiniDisc Recorder Walkman:
Sony practically invented portable audio with its Walkman
line. This unit continues the legacy with the fastest
PC-to-player transfer times of any unit. It records at
32X, which is quite fast for a portable. The Sony features
very long battery life and an optical line in jack. Like
most recent Sony units it uses the copy-protected Atrac3
format instead of MP3. This limits the number of times
you can transfer a CD track and is a minor hassle. This
unit uses MiniDiscs, an older technology than mini CDs.
Sony
MZNH600D:

including MP3, WMA* and WAV. The MZ-NH600D is also backward
compatible so theres no problem using any of your
