Compaq iPaq PM-1:

imation RipGo:

This portable doubles as a CD burner. This means you still need a computer to load music into it, but your computer doesn't need to have a CD-R drive. Weighing in at eight ounces, the RipGo is a bit too large to fit in most pockets. The rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery provides playback for about five hours; WMA files play for six hours but MP3 files play for just three hours. Many users may want to carry a spare battery. When it first came out, the RipGo cost around $400, but is now available for about half of that, making it a good buy.

Sony MiniDisc Recorder Walkman:

Sony practically invented portable audio with its Walkman line. This unit continues the legacy with the fastest PC-to-player transfer times of any unit. It records at 32X, which is quite fast for a portable. The Sony features very long battery life and an optical line in jack. Like most recent Sony units it uses the copy-protected Atrac3™ format instead of MP3. This limits the number of times you can transfer a CD track and is a minor hassle. This unit uses MiniDiscs, an older technology than mini CDs.

Sony MZNH600D:

Now you can save time saving songs with Sony’s new MZ-NH600D. Thanks to the supplied SonicStage® 2 software, it’s never been so easy to import, manage and transfer your downloads directly from your PC. This Hi-MD Walkman will keep you going for hours, storing up to 45 hours of music on a single Hi-MD MiniDisc. This Hi-MD Walkman player records in high-quality ATRAC3plus format and lets you transfer the most popular Internet audio formats, including MP3, WMA* and WAV. The MZ-NH600D is also backward compatible so there’s no problem using any of your standard MiniDisc media. Easy Jog Dial® Navigation lets you easily scroll through playlists on the big 3 line LCD display.
